Feather Baby
I found two feather-less baby birds, what do I do?
I found these two baby birds with no feathers in my backyard. I have no idea where they came from. My dog got ahold of one, so it has a few cuts where it is bleeding. That one has a little bit of feathers on its wings. The other baby bird is smaller and has no feathers. I put them on my playground and set them on some giant leafs, below some other leaves that were hanging over the playground, to keep them hidden from predators. My mom says they don’t have a chance. I don’t know what to do!!!!
I read online that touching them is just a myth. I handled them with gloves anyways.
First of all, DON’T feed them anything or try to force them to drink, even if it seems healthy for them. They can choke very easily if you don’t do it right. The mother bird is obviously the best caretaker for the little ones, so the best thing to do is to try to place the bird back in its nest if at all possible. The fact that the babies don’t have feathers probably means that the nest is nearby. If you find it, put the birds back. If you can’t find the nest, or find it but can’t reach it, you can make a “makeshift” nest out of a clean Cool-Whip container or margarine dish. Make holes in the bottom of it to allow for water drainage. Line the bowl with paper towels. Then tack the makeshift nest back up in the tree as close to the original nest as possible. Finally, place the baby birds into this and leave. The parents will usually come back in a short time and will feed the baby in it just like it was the original nest. Don’t hang around the area too much, or the mother might be too afraid to come back. Watch from a distance. You might want to bring the injured one in to a local wildlife rehabber. Look online of in the phone book to find the nearest one, or call your local animal control center. They should have the contact information of some local rehabbers.
