I would like to know if I can mount a Holga Flash on a Canon T1i hotshoe?

Ive been a DLSR owner for quite sometime now and have never been interested in an external flash until recently. I own a Holga and have a Holga flash mounted so I was wondering if I could use that on my T1i just to see what happens. Since I don't have much knowledge about external flashes I was hoping someone could tell me if this was a bad idea!!

Find the flash manufacturer and model number and look it up on http://www.botzilla.com/photo/strobeVolts.html

If you can't find it on that list (or if you want to be sure before mounting a $30 flash on a $600+ camera) get a multimeter and measure the voltage of the hotshoe contacts. If it's over 6 volts Canon would tell you that it's a no no.

Either way the camera will not meter for the flash. You'd have to adjust the aperture to the flash's power. It's not hard to do really, photographers had to do it that way up until pretty recently and flash was used reliably then. It could be a great learning experience for you.
