Gear! Part 2 – good to have on stock
I wrote to the lens in some detail in my last shipment, and now I want to talk about some of the accessories are so wonderful to have while I am doing wedding photography. Here's a quick but comprehensive list:
Memory cards, tons of them: My greatest 8GB are, I recommend spreading your images across multiple cards, because if your card 16 GB or 32 GB bites the dust with all its images, you will mourn. I do not want that. The Thinktank Pixel Pocket Rocket Photo is the best way I've found to carry them. Besides the name is funny.
Tape Guy: Imagine tape without waste, at a price much higher. This tape works well in almost anything, and I've used it for almost everything. Have a roll of tape adhesive in hand is how to keep your knife in the pocket of trust: you never know when they need it, but when you do make you happy.
Gitzo Tripod oriented head: You should have a nice tripod, and this is a carbon fiber, making it easy on my back. The head is large also oriented, which allows very finely tuned adjustments that are not critical for weddings, but for almost all of my other work.
Canon Output Cable: Get one of these! They are great for reducing camera shake when you have your camera on a tripod, I use one for most of my portraits and definitely for the formal family.
Kenko Extension Tubes: Do not have a macro lens? Buy this set affordable, and can use any of your lenses to wonderful shot near a wedding ring. Do a lot of food photography with these too.
Canon TTL Flash cable: It is always good have, if you have the IR transmitter that are even better. I'm probably going to bite the bullet soon and pick one up. Or maybe you'd like me to have a gift birthday?
PocketWizards: One of my best investments. These little guys are reliable, last forever, and are a must-have if you use lighting strobe. We use them to wirelessly trigger flash for family portrait photography, and also light-on-a-stick-with them during the reception. I have not tried new similar products on the market, but I know that PocketWizard has always worked well for me.
Canon EX 580, two. These are workhorses as well. I have had for years, and not quit. Shooting For weddings, it is imperative that you have nice flash that can rotate his head. Any flash is set to fire single will be cheaper, but can not give flattering light. Do not use direct flash if you can help!
Lumiquest Pocket Bouncer: I used one of the Lightspheres for years, and lost several of them. They give you soft light, but do not give you much power from your flash. When shooting a wedding, speed and time Fast recycling is very important, and in my opinion, the Lumiquest does just that. I like the light coming from it, is the next best thing to carry around in a box light. Great price point.
XS chimera or a flash of light box Photoflex: We use these for our light on a stick, because I always like to have those harsh shadows. They help to soften a bit.
Finally, the Manfrotto monopod. These are great because you can use them to maintain constant while the shooting of the wedding ceremony, and maintain their mobility, and then use them to light during the reception. Also, if you are in a bad part of town are ultra threatening, I would not be surprised to see a band of photographers bike carrying these in the city some time. Please send photos if you see it.
